Construction

Our orangery, similar to our conservatory, is inspired by the classic English style of the Victorian era. While at that time these stylish structures served mainly for overwintering exotic plants, today a Ludwig & Sons orangery is used as an elegant living space extension, to cover a private pool and spa area, or in the restaurant and hotel sector. Thanks to the exceptionally high-quality wood-aluminium system combined with triple glazing, a Ludwig & Sons orangery is highly insulated and can, whether as an exclusive extension or freestanding in the garden, be used year-round as a fully-fledged living space.

Floor Plan

The first step in the planning process is to determine the floor plan. You are completely free in this regard, as every one of our projects is custom-made according to your wishes. A conservatory or orangery by Ludwig & Sons can be either attached to an existing building or realised as a separate, freestanding structure. When designing the floor plan, many considerations usually come into play, from the intended use to the overall aesthetic. For example, many of our conservatories and orangeries are designed with a symmetrical floor plan to achieve the most classic and timeless appearance possible. Your personal specialist advisor is also on hand with recommendations during the floor plan design phase. Feel free to find inspiration in our galleries of realised and planned projects:

Roof Shape

A variety of options are available to you for the roof shape. You can generally choose between a glass roof in the wood-aluminium system and a flat roof of timber construction. The flat roof can also be optionally equipped with a roof lantern or a larger roof overhang. In addition, you have various decorative elements to choose from, such as Victorian-style guttering or so-called dentils, to design your roof shape entirely according to your wishes.

Glass Roof

Our conservatories are crafted with a glass roof in our high-grade wood-aluminium system. This roof construction is distinguished by its large proportion of glazing and its delicate supporting structure. It can be designed in individual shapes, for example as a gabled, lean-to, or hipped roof. For the glazing, double or triple glazed units can be used, optionally with solar-protection or self-cleaning coatings. Furthermore, our so-called “Dreamlights” can be integrated into the roof rafters for particularly atmospheric lighting. At night, the roof structure becomes a starry sky, while the multitude of glazed panels also creates a very special indoor atmosphere during the day.

Flat Roof

While our conservatories use a glass roof, our orangeries feature our highly insulated orangery roof. This flat roof is manufactured at our company site using an ecological and sustainable timber construction method. The design is determined in particular by the structural requirements; as a rule, a timber-beamed ceiling is planned. This allows for a wide variety of floor plan shapes and, with modern insulating materials, guarantees the highest thermal insulation standards. A service void can also be provided within the flat roof structure, which can be used to integrate lighting and shading options. Thus, in addition to its attractive design and sustainable timber construction, the flat roof also impresses with its high degree of functionality. Upon request, the flat roof can also be supplemented with an elegant roof lantern or a larger roof overhang.

Roof Lantern

The flat roof described above can optionally be supplemented with a roof lantern in the wood-aluminium system. The roof lantern can be individually planned and is often realised as a hipped gable roof. This construction impresses with its distinctive design language and creates a unique interior experience through additional light ingress from above. Double or triple glazed units can be used, optionally with a special coating for solar protection or self-cleaning properties. Due to the relatively small proportion of glass, additional roof shading is often not necessary. There is also the possibility of integrating our “Dreamlights” or creating indirect lighting with perimeter light coves. This creates a particularly atmospheric ambiance in the orangery, especially at night

Roof Overhang

By default, the timber construction of our flat roof with its joist structure is designed for a roof overhang of up to 50 cm. On request, larger overhangs can also be realised, for example, to accommodate Victorian decorative columns on the exterior. In this case, the flat roof can be constructed with a double joist structure, making overhangs of up to 100 cm possible. Regardless of the underlying construction, external shading, such as external venetian blinds, can also be integrated into the overhang. Furthermore, a variety of design options like Victorian-style guttering or so-called dentils are available to decorate the roof overhang.

Opening Options

Regarding opening options, Ludwig & Sons offers you, as a client or architect, a wide selection of different windows and doors to choose from. For instance, you can select an elegant hinged door or the highly functional parallel slide-and-tilt door to create large openings in your conservatory or orangery, thus connecting the indoor and outdoor areas. We will present these two door variants as examples below:

Hinged Door

The elegant hinged door in a high-grade wood-aluminium construction is distinguished by its excellent material quality, good thermal insulation, and high levels of sound and burglary protection. Individual design options allow the door to blend harmoniously into conservatories and orangeries. As a double-leaf opening element in a French door configuration, it allows for a wider opening without a central mullion. Its advantages include an elegant appearance, easy locking mechanisms, a comfortable threshold height, and excellent sealing.

Parallel Slide-and-Tilt Door

The parallel slide-and-tilt door is one of the most modern types of sliding doors, combining the advantages of sliding and tilting functions. Thanks to the parallel-moving sash, it is particularly space-saving, as no swinging sash projects into the room. For optimal ventilation, the door can be slightly tilted without having to be fully opened. The sliding function, which can also be implemented as a double-leaf version without a central mullion, allows for a generous opening to the outside. Overall, this door is characterised by maximising living space, effective ventilation thanks to the tilt function, and excellent sealing and thermal insulation values.
