Orangeries

Like our conservatory, our orangery is inspired by the classic English style epoch under Queen Victoria. While these elegant buildings were mainly used to overwinter exotic plants back then, today an orangery from Ludwig & Sons serves as a stylish extension to living space, as a roofing for pool and spa areas or in the catering and hotel sector. Thanks to the high-quality wood-aluminium system and triple glazing, an orangery from Ludwig & Sons offers excellent thermal insulation and can be used as a fully-fledged living space all year round, whether as an exclusive extension or free-standing in the garden.

The origin of the orangery

The term “orangery” has its origins in the prestigious greenhouses of the Victorian era, which were used specifically for overwintering orange and lemon trees and other exotic plants. These elegant buildings were often erected in the surroundings of baroque palaces and gardens and can still be found today as freestanding architectural gems in many gardens and parks. Nowadays, orangeries are valued for their aesthetic and exclusive architectural style as elegant extensions to living spaces, adding a special flair to any property.

Victorian style

The Victorian style of Ludwig & Sons is characterised by an incomparable attention to detail, which gives every building a particularly elegant character. Characteristic of this historicising style are the many variations of glazing bars and intricate decorations such as mouldings, denticuli, millings, fillings, ornamentation and rosettes. The numerous options for varying materials, colours and details make each Ludwig & Sons orangery unique.

Customise your design

Versatile use

An orangery from Ludwig & Sons can be used both privately and commercially, similar to a classic conservatory. In the catering and hotel industry, it offers a unique setting for weddings and other events, while at the same time stylishly extending the guest area. As a pool house, it can cover an outdoor pool or serve as a prestigious, light-flooded wellness and spa area in hotels. In the private sector, an orangery offers the opportunity to elegantly extend existing buildings with additional living space. It can also be realised as a freestanding object in the garden to create a stylish highlight.

„As a family business, we do not just sell a product. We make a personal promise – from our family to yours.“

Our Manufactory

Wood-aluminium system

In the past, orangeries were usually built entirely from wood or steel, but today our wood-aluminium system is considered to be particularly innovative. It combines the warmth and cosiness of wood on the inside with the weather resistance and durability of aluminium on the outside. The load-bearing structure is made of wood and clad on the outside with protective, colour- and weather-resistant aluminium profiles. These wood-aluminium constructions are designed and produced entirely by us with great craftsmanship as unique one-offs.

The advantages of wood

Thanks to its natural and warm surface, wood creates a pleasant, cosy living atmosphere. It has the ability to absorb and release moisture and to filter the room air to a certain extent. Thanks to these hygroscopic properties, wood regulates the indoor climate in a natural way. Wood is also an ecological and renewable raw material. By building an orangery from Ludwig & Sons, you are making an active contribution to climate protection, as the wood used has absorbed CO₂ during its growth – one cubic metre of wood stores around one tonne of it. The felled trees create space for new growth, which in turn removes further CO₂ from the atmosphere, creating a climate-promoting cycle. In addition to its feel-good and climate factor, wood is characterised by excellent sound and thermal insulation values, making it our preferred building material. This is why we are proud to use timber constructions.

Your Personal Consultation

Every great project begins with the first conversation. We invite you to share your wishes and ideas with us, no matter how fully formed they are at this stage. Our experienced specialist advisors will make time for you, answer your initial questions, and explore the potential paths forward. Whether by video call, over the phone, or with us in our showroom, this initial discussion is, of course, free of charge and without obligation. Our goal is to make your first step as simple and pleasant as possible.

Multifunctional glazing

The large areas of glazing, optionally with a glass dome in the roof area, create a unique lighting atmosphere and an inviting atmosphere inside the orangery. In addition to the aesthetic benefits, highly thermally insulated double or triple glazing ensures an optimal indoor climate. In the colder months, solar energy is utilised efficiently, while the well-insulated orangery roof protects the interior from excessive heating in warmer temperatures. The window and door openings integrated into the glass surfaces also enable additional natural air and heat exchange, which can be controlled automatically to ensure an ideal indoor climate at all times. As an option, multifunctional glazing can be used to provide sun protection, facilitate cleaning or have a burglar-resistant effect.

The orangery roof

The roof of an orangery from Ludwig & Sons differs significantly from a conservatory roof, as it is only partially glazed. The basic construction consists of a highly thermally insulated flat roof, into which a glass dome can also be integrated for more light at the customer’s request. This often central glass dome in the flat roof is also manufactured in a wood-aluminium system in order to make optimum use of the advantages of this material combination. The lower proportion of glass also means that no additional shading is required in the roof area, as less solar energy is absorbed. This makes a decisive contribution to ensuring a pleasant indoor climate, especially if the building is south-facing.

Our construction options

Ventilation and shading

The visual speciality of orangeries also requires well thought-out solutions in terms of ventilation and shading. In order to preserve the extraordinary appearance of the windows and glazing, it makes sense to integrate a ventilation system with ventilation elements that are as small and unobtrusive as possible. As external shading is less suitable due to the filigree elements, internal shading is particularly suitable for Victorian projects. In addition, solar radiation can be reduced using solar control glass. This special, coated flat glass reflects (reflective glass) or absorbs (absorptive glass) the sun’s rays. In combination with triple glazing, heat radiation can be significantly reduced.

Lighting options

The lighting can be stylishly integrated into the design of both the exterior and interior of an elegant orangery from Ludwig & Sons. The roof overhang of the flat roof is perfect for the installation of outdoor downlights, which impressively set the scene for the orangery at dusk and at night. Inside, the closed part of the flat roof, the roof cut-out and the glass dome offer ideal opportunities for integrating lighting elements. Dimmable strip lights and our LED Dreamlights, which are recessed into the rafters and simulate a starry sky, create a uniquely atmospheric ambience. In addition, concealed LED strips can also be used to discreetly and indirectly illuminate the stylishly designed panels on the walls.

3D visualisation

We use special software to create photorealistic, rendered visualisations of your customised dream conservatory. This means you don’t just have to rely on your imagination, but can view your configured conservatory in a 3D visualisation in advance. This allows you to see, for example, whether the chosen design harmonises, how the conservatory fits in with the existing building or which opening options have been planned. There is no better way to prepare for the purchase of an exclusive conservatory from our production facility.

From the idea to realisation

We or our local partners provide you with professional and reliable support from the initial consultation through to installation. The process begins with a personal and expert consultation with our in-house consultants or our local partners. Once the order has been placed, a site survey is usually carried out, which then serves as the basis for CAD planning. Once the production drawings have been approved, production begins in our own workshop, where modern CNC machines combined with traditional craftsmanship guarantee the highest quality standards. Finally, our in-house fitters or our selected local partners carry out the professional installation.
