Design

Every conservatory, orangery, and pool house by Ludwig & Sons is a bespoke, one-of-a-kind piece. In addition to the already highly configurable overall structures, you can choose from a wide range of design elements. These range from various glazing bar options to Victorian columns. Inside and out, you can also highlight your structure with different lighting options. Furthermore, a large selection of colours is available for the interior wood surfaces and the exterior aluminium surfaces. In total, there are hundreds of combinations of different designs with which you can personalise your project and express yourself. This ensures every one of our structures becomes a unique masterpiece, the likes of which will certainly not be found anywhere else in the world.

Ornamentation

Every one of our projects can be personalised according to your own wishes and ideas, ultimately becoming as individual as its creator. A wide variety of design elements are available for this, ranging from Victorian guttering on the exterior to the classic ‘German Staff’ (or staff bead) edge profile on the interior. In our in-house manufactory, almost all of your wishes can be realised, ensuring that every project becomes a globally unique, one-of-a-kind piece.

Glazing Bars

Windows and doors can optionally be fitted with either true or simulated glazing bars. True glazing bars divide the pane into multiple sections using structural muntins – the closest to the historic original, though requiring greater manufacturing effort. An alternative is the Vienna bar, where decorative bar replicas are applied to the outer surface of the glass and are virtually indistinguishable from true glazing bars. Regardless of the type chosen, glazing bars can be arranged horizontally or diagonally. In general, it is the glazing bars that lend a Ludwig & Sons conservatory or orangery its characteristic historic appearance.

Panel Infills

As an alternative to full glazing, panel infills can be incorporated as both a decorative and functional element. The outer surface consists of powder-coated aluminium, whilst the inner surface is finished in real timber to complement the interior. Optional flat timber panels can be fitted on the inside, whilst decorative elements such as mouldings or rosettes can be added to the exterior. In terms of thermal insulation and sound reduction, panel infills meet the same standards as the rest of the construction. They further articulate the façade of a conservatory or orangery, lending the overall structure an even more elegant and refined appearance.

Dentils

Dentils, or a ‘dentil course’, originally formed a frieze in the Ionic order, one of the five classical orders of architecture, abstracted from the shape of beam-ends. They were particularly popular in ancient architecture; for example, this style-defining frieze can be seen beneath the eaves of many ancient structures. In our conservatories and orangeries, they are typically installed below the guttering and thus serve as an additional decorative element, giving the overall structure a neoclassical appearance.

Roof Ornamentation

In addition to dentils, both the glass roof and the flat roof from Ludwig & Sons can be enhanced with further decorative elements. For instance, Victorian guttering can be installed on the exterior, or the glass roof can be supplemented with a historicist decorative cresting with finials. The combination of Victorian guttering and dentils, for example, creates a stepped effect on the roof overhang, giving it a distinctive appearance. Overall, the various ornaments turn the glass or flat roof into a unique highlight of the entire structure.

„The grand form impresses the eye, but the fine details capture the heart. Therein lies the true art.“

Columns

Ludwig & Sons orangeries are frequently enhanced on the exterior with Victorian columns, which can serve both structural and purely decorative purposes. Their modular construction – comprising shaft, capital, base and decorative rings – allows each column to be individually configured, with a choice of various diameters available. These aluminium columns are cast using the traditional green sand casting technique at a specialist foundry and, once blasted and lacquered, are visually indistinguishable from antique cast iron columns. They lend a Ludwig & Sons orangery a truly stately and regal appearance that is second to none.

Refined Interior Finishes

The interior can also be enhanced with additional ornamentation. Various timber mouldings are available for this purpose, to give the visible timber edges of posts and rafters a distinctive shape. Milling these edge profiles visually refines the structure. These details, often found in classic furniture making, lend the interior a higher sense of quality and a pleasant tactile feel, which further underscores the homely atmosphere.

Lighting

With the right lighting, you can truly showcase your conservatory or orangery from Ludwig & Sons. In the interior, you can create a starry sky in the glass roof with our “Dreamlights”. Other indirect lighting options for the interior create a very special atmosphere. For the exterior, you can also transform your structure into a nocturnal eye-catcher with spotlights and light strips.

Interior Lighting

A wealth of options is available for creating a beautifully atmospheric interior. Where a glass roof is installed, our Dreamlights are the ideal choice – individual light points integrated directly into the roof rafter profiles, with all cabling completely concealed. The result is a uniquely atmospheric ambience reminiscent of a starlit sky. This lighting can be complemented by indirect lighting solutions within the flat roof recess or along the solid timber panel infills. Combined with dimmers, the lighting can be adjusted at any time to suit the mood and time of day.

Exterior Lighting

For exterior lighting, spotlights and light strips are particularly suitable for the flat roofs of our orangeries. These can be integrated into the roof overhang and can be illuminated in one or even multiple colours. In this way, a Ludwig & Sons orangery can be skilfully showcased and transformed into an absolute highlight at night. The play of shadows from the various decorative elements creates a truly unique appearance that will leave every observer in awe.

Surfaces and Colours

Whether for the interior or exterior, our standard is that all surfaces of our projects meet the highest quality benchmarks and have a flawless appearance. We therefore place great value on the underlying surface treatments, which are carried out partly by machine and largely by hand in multi-stage processes. Regular quality controls guarantee a high standard of quality and a long lifespan for the materials used. In terms of colour, you can choose from a large selection of possible wood and powder coatings and design your project’s colour scheme entirely according to your personal preferences.

Interior

All timber surfaces in the interior are treated through a multi-stage process that is largely carried out by hand. The structural framework consists of laminated spruce timber, sourced in the highest quality grade available in Germany. All surfaces are finely planed and sanded, partly by machine and partly by hand. Every component receives a chamfer or decorative moulding along its edges to protect against paint detachment. Following pre-treatment with a timber protection stain, opaque finishes receive an application of spray filler. The final finish is applied in two coats of solvent-free thick-layer lacquer, with intermediate sanding between coats – the result is a timber surface of true furniture quality. A wide selection of semi-transparent and opaque colour finishes is available.

Exterior

On the exterior, all timber structures that would otherwise be exposed to the weather are protected by rear-ventilated aluminium cladding. For this purpose, these aluminium parts are treated with a high-quality powder coating according to the quality guidelines of GSB and Qualicoat. This ensures a weatherproof and durable surface on the outside. The powder coating is available in all RAL colours; structured or special colours can also be realised on request. Compared to pure timber constructions, the aluminium cladding gives the conservatories and orangeries from Ludwig & Sons a particularly refined appearance.
