Why Choose Wood-Aluminium
Our commitment is to manufacture our exclusive conservatories and orangeries using the very best system available. This is why we at Ludwig & Sons chose the premium wood-aluminium system decades ago – a system we believe to be superior to any comparable alternative. The aluminium cladding on the exterior provides exceptional weather resistance and longevity, whilst the bespoke powder-coated finish lends the structure an elegant, refined aesthetic. The wood construction at its core is not only ecological and sustainable, but creates a warm, inviting atmosphere indoors whilst naturally regulating the indoor climate. Together, the system perfectly unites the technical properties of wood and aluminium, delivering outstanding overall performance. This includes first-class thermal insulation and acoustic values that other systems simply cannot match. The case for wood-aluminium is compelling, which is why we have dedicated our entire manufacturing process to this system and recommend it to every client without exception.
The Key Benefits
For decades, Ludwig & Sons has deliberately championed the wood-aluminium system. The reason is straightforward: it brings together the best of two worlds in one superior construction. Outside, robust aluminium delivers lasting protection against the elements; inside, warm wood creates an atmosphere like no other; and the result is exceptional technical performance throughout. Discover in detail why this system is the perfect choice for your project:

I. Aluminium on the Exterior
In Ludwig & Sons’ wood-aluminium system, all wood components exposed to the weather are clad with powder-coated aluminium sheets and profiles. Adequate spacing between the wood and aluminium structures provides proper rear-ventilation – a form of structural wood protection that prevents moisture build-up. The wood construction is thus permanently shielded from wind and weather, guaranteeing exceptional longevity. What’s more, the powder-coated aluminium cladding gives your conservatory or orangery a particularly refined aesthetic.
Durability Without Compromise
Ludwig & Sons has specialised in the premium wood-aluminium system for decades. One key reason for this choice was the clear superiority of this material combination over pure wood constructions in terms of weather resistance, durability and maintenance. Windows, doors or conservatories with wood surfaces on the exterior require regular maintenance and time-consuming painting. Without it, the wood surfaces visibly deteriorate under weathering effects – heat, cold, UV radiation and rain. By contrast, in the wood-aluminium system the wood components are protected from the elements by aluminium cladding, making our system virtually maintenance-free with a considerably longer lifespan.
Premium Finish & Texture
The aluminium cladding in the wood-aluminium system serves more than just a protective function – it gives your conservatory or orangery a refined, premium appearance. The powder coating can be fully customised to your specifications: colour, texture, gloss level. From matt to high-gloss, fine to coarse grain, metallic to mica finishes – the design possibilities are virtually endless. All externally visible aluminium components are coated with your chosen powder finish, including decorative elements such as the Victorian columns. The result is a structure with both visual elegance and a tactile refinement.

II. Wood on the Interior
The core structure of our wood-aluminium system is crafted from glued laminated wood manufactured specifically to our requirements – low-knot or knot-free, and of exceptional quality. This forms the main structure visible on the interior. The wood surface creates a warm, homely ambience indoors and regulates the indoor climate naturally. Moreover, wood is a renewable and sustainable building material that makes climate-friendly, ecological construction possible.
Warm Ambience
Wood’s natural, warm surface creates a comfortable, inviting ambience indoors. Whilst pure aluminium or steel constructions tend to feel cold and unwelcoming, the wood surfaces in our wood-aluminium system create a pleasant, homely environment. A Ludwig & Sons conservatory or orangery becomes a space that invites you to linger – a place where you naturally feel at home.
See It for Yourself
Healthy Living Climate
Unlike aluminium or steel, wood possesses special hygroscopic properties – it absorbs and releases moisture whilst also filtering the air to a degree. The wood structure in our conservatories and orangeries therefore regulates the indoor climate naturally. This creates a pleasant, healthy atmosphere that cool aluminium or steel constructions could never achieve.
Sustainability
Wood is a renewable, sustainable and environmentally friendly material. By commissioning a conservatory or orangery from Ludwig & Sons, you actively contribute to climate protection – the wood used has already stored considerable quantities of CO₂ during its growth. One cubic metre of wood sequesters approximately one tonne of CO₂. When trees are felled, new trees take their place, absorbing more CO₂ from the atmosphere and continuing a climate-positive cycle.
III. Outstanding Performance Values
Our wood-aluminium system unites the technical properties of two materials, creating a construction that is virtually impossible to surpass. This is evident in the technical specifications, which can meet almost any performance requirement depending on configuration. Our wood-aluminium system stands out particularly for its exceptional thermal insulation and acoustic properties.
Excellent Thermal Insulation
Wood naturally possesses excellent insulating properties. With low thermal conductivity, it retains heat effectively and prevents it escaping. This delivers superior insulation and energy efficiency. Aluminium, conversely, has high thermal conductivity and can lead to heat loss. By combining wood on the inside with aluminium on the outside, thermal bridging is minimised – the wood functions as a natural thermal barrier. In this respect, our wood-aluminium system is far superior to pure aluminium constructions.

Exceptional Sound Insulation
Wood absorbs sound and provides a natural barrier against noise. It effectively reduces sound transmission, ensuring a peaceful interior. By comparison, aluminium or plastic constructions offer limited sound insulation simply due to their material properties. Our wood-aluminium system, however, harnesses wood’s natural damping qualities and – when combined with triple glazing, for example – delivers outstanding acoustic protection you’ll never want to be without.
